Watched the truly mystifying Judex last night. The GF put it on saying he wouldn’t tell me what it was but I had expressed an interest in watching it. Even if he had told me it would still have been a surprise as the Criterion case made it sound like a smart, stylish and occasionally surreal crime caper. Which I suppose it was, but one must remove the word ‘occasionally’. The villainess was fantastic, striking poses and flouncing around dressed as a nun, and by the time the circus turned up in town (‘Do you remember my uncle the lion tamer who was cruel to me? He was eaten by a lion’), it was accepted as just one more in a stream of oddities. Later googling reveals that this is a condensed version of a 12 hour series but even after finding this out I remain mystified.
Yesterday was greatly redeemed by an evening excursion; we went to Sushi Azabu for some of their excellent fishy wares and on the way passed a huge number of lion dancers making their way through Bukit Bintang. A good and timely reminder of why I like living here.
